Preferences

The Preferences screen is used to change a number of user options and overall FastMail.FM configuration options. You probably shouldn't need to access this screen too often. Usually you'll set it up once and that'll be it.

User/Account

Full name

Your full name. Used in the greeting text when you login to your account and in emails we send you.

For the name used on sending email, see the Personalities screen for more details.

Time zone

This lets you select the time zone you are currently in. All dates and times of emails and logins will then be displayed in the selected time zone.

Communication level

This popup lets you choose how often FastMail.FM contacts you. The options are:

  • None: Very dangerous: Even if your account is over quota we won't contact you to warn you. This option means we don't contact you unless legally required
  • Important: We will only send you information necessary to maintain your email service
  • Informative: Recommended for most users. We will send you notification of important changes
  • Chatty: For those wanting to get the most out of the service, we will send you occasional updates on happenings at the forum, summary of latest news, and so forth.
Keyboard shortcuts

Controls whether keyboard shortcuts are enabled in the web interface. Most common keys are:

  • j - previous message (mailbox or message read screen)
  • k - next message (mailbox or message read screen)
  • Enter - read message (mailbox screen)
  • u - back to mailbox (message read screen)
  • . - action menu (mailbox or message read screen)

See this wiki page for more keys.

When keyboard shortcuts are disabled, there is only one special shortcut key left enabled, ctrl-space, which brings up the action menu

Security

Use this section to change your password, or your backup email address. To change any of these settings, you'll have to enter your existing password first in the "Current password" section first.

We recommend that you keep your backup email address valid and up to date. We will send your password there if you forget it, and we send important notification emails if needed (eg. account renewal or over quota notifications). We'll never send spam or advertising, or give the address to anyone else.

Display

Web interface

Controls which web interface to use. We recommend you use the new interface (available since Feb 2009), which has more features such as better searching, keyboard shortcuts, and a more modern look.

Some very old systems (eg. Web TV) don't support the new interface, so you should use the old interface if you access regularly from one of those systems. The old interface will eventually be discontinued, probably sometime in 2010.

Style sheet

Controls which display style to use. The web interface allows significant customisation through different stylesheets. The new interface currently has only a few different styles, but more are expected to be available in the future.

Custom styles

New new interface allows you to tweak the web interface with custom css and js files. This is designed for advanced users who know what they're doing. We don't offer customer support in creating specific tweaks.

See our wiki css tweaks and js tweaks pages for more information.

Username display

When you login to the new interface, your username is displayed at the top right of the page. This is because some users have a few different accounts, and it makes it easy to see immediately which account you're in.

Some people prefer not to see this, or to customise what is displayed. This textbox lets you choose specific text to be displayed instead, or you can use the special terms USERNAME to display your account username, or FULLNAME to display your account Full name.

Compose

This section lets you control a number of defaults when using the compose screen. Most are straight forward and not described here.

Wrap lines

By default, any outgoing email messages are wrapped at 72 characters, in order to make your messages easily viewable for a wide range of email reading software.

If you uncheck this checkbox, FastMail.FM will leave any long lines unwrapped. Note that this may cause problems for some people, so you should only clear this checkbox if you are certain that the recipients of your message are able to deal with long lines.

When replying/When forwarding

When you reply to or forward a message, this controls what happens to the original message content.

Ignore original

Original message is not included in the reply in any way.

Quote original

The original message is included in the reply but "quoted". For text messages, this means all lines are indented with "> " at the start. For HTML message, the message content is block quoted (indendent with a blue bar down the left side). An attribution line (see below) is also included above the quoted text.

Inline original

The original message is included in the reply unchanged. A message summary (include from address, to address, date and subject) is included above the original message.

Attach original

The original message is included in it's original form but as a message attachment, rather than as viewable or editable inline/quoted text.

Note that this controls the default action when replying or forwarding. You can change the action on a per-message basis. To do that, just reply to/forward the message as you normally would, and then after you get to the compose screen, select the quoting action you actually want from the Action menu on the compose screen.

Reply attribution

When you reply to a message, an attribution of the form:

Is added before the message.

You can customise the attribute line attached by editing this field. There are a number of substitution parameters you can use that include information from the original email. More information about the format of this field can be found on the custom attribution line wiki page.

View

Default charset

Normally FastMail.FM will change the character set of the view message screen to the appropriate character set for that message, thus allowing you to view messages in foreign languages correctly. Unfortunately this is not possible on the Mailbox screen because different messages could use different character sets.

However, if you tend to receive lots of messages with the same character set, you can set it here so that all screens without a known character set use this one instead.

The default value used is ISO-8859-1. We recommend that you leave it as the default unless you specifically know that you want to read and write messages in a different charset by default.

Phishing protection

This enables a basic phishing protection algorithim used when viewing messages. It looks for links in emails that appear to have a hostname, but where the actual link points to a different hostname to the hostname in the text of the link.

This can detect some obvious phishing links, but can also cause false positives quite regularly (especially in newsletter type emails) and so can be disabled here.

Extra headers

The standard email headers display on the message read screen shows the From address, To address, Cc address (if any) and Date. You can view the full headers of the message by clicking the "Show full header" link on the message view screen.

Some people have particular headers they regularly want to see, without having to view all the headers. By entering a comma separated list of headers here, they will be displayed on the message read screen in the standard header list by default. Some examples of useful headers (but you can choose any you want):

  • X-Spam-Score - the spam score the email got from our spam filter
  • X-Delivered-To - the original email address the email was delivered to in the SMTP transactions
  • Message-Id - the unique message id attached to the message
  • Size - a special "virtual" header that holds the total size of the message

Access

Lets you control whether IMAP and/or POP access is available to your account (subject to service level limitations as well).

If you're a big IMAP user, you might want to disable POP access to your account because if you accidentally setup a POP email client, it might pull all email from your Inbox and delete it, which can be annoying to fix.
